Tips on How To Hire a Plumber to Get Your Home Renovation Job Quickly

Hiring a Plumber to do Home Renovation

For some people today, the very idea evokes visions of midnight toilet overflows. Don't be afraid!. Here, we're here to show you that the plumber is actually your friend. This plumber that we will help you find will do his best to plumb your new kitchen, add a shower anywhere you'd like, or update your old bathroom.

So what do you do to hire the right home renovation plumber? Just follow these easy steps to get started.

Ask a Local Friend or Neighbor

The right place to start is by inquiring from your neighbors or family. It's really the best idea to ask family who have recently done new construction. Keep reminding yourself that you are hiring a remodeling plumber and not a repair plumber. You may notice those quickie-plumber trucks or vans, realize that they do emergency repairs (repair work) and not new construction work. The best situation is to have the plumber arrive at your home at the agreed on date and have then get started immediately.

Ask About The Plumbers State Licensing

Call the state licensing website and ask if the plumber in question has any pending complaints. Of course, not every state has plumber licenses  but, if you're does, be sure to call the state licensing agency and ask them. If the plumber in question does have a license, it still doesn't mean that in reality they are a good plumber. Having a license just means that they've met the bare minimum requirements to be a plumber. Local word of mouth is the best indicator of the plumbers real value.

Firm Up Your Plumbing Plan

Be sure to "firm up" the big picture of what you want your final result to be. You don't actually need to know exact pipe sizes or fittings...you just need to have the "Big Picture" in mind so that the job is done right.

Make Cheat Sheet for Your Calls

Be sure you ask about
Cost Per Hour
The Cost Per Hour of Non-Plumbing tasks (like opening a wall)
Is the customer charged while plumber waits for on-site delivery of parts?
Is the Plumber Insured and Does He have Liability Insurance or Workers Compensation?
Who gets the permit for the job? You or the Plumber (usually you have to do this)
Assuming your project is not a rush, can you negotiate a more advantageous deal by employing the plumber at one of his slow times?

Make Calls

When you call, ask for the manager. Remain calm while waiting on the phone. These guys mostly deal with real plumbing contractors so be friendly, direct, and firm. Yes can actually disarm them if you ask for their need and explain that you need their expertise.

Now Time to Get the Permit

Are you the person getting the permit? Now is the time that you should apply for it.

Buy Your Fixtures from Lowes or Home Depot

This is where you'll buy the toilets, sinks, fixtures, and anything else you'll need.

Getting Your Job Site Ready

You don't want your expensive plumber to waste valuable time opening up walls, clearing crawlspaces, lighting dark basements. Even if you think they should do this, do this for them. It's your house, after all.

Remain on the Job While the Plumber Works

Don't hover. Instead, remain out of sight but within calling distance for questions from the remodeling plumber. You want to encourage questions. You will get a much better work product if you do.

Thank them When Done

After the job is done, be sure to thank the plumber. Then, before the plumber leaves, test the plumbing fixture (sink, hot-water heater, or toilet) and make sure that it works. Job Well Done. Congrats!
